The UP Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) is grappling with a shortage of essential laboratory reagents, hindering adequate diagnosis and care to patients.

Sources within the UP-PGH Department of Laboratories have confirmed that the shortage has persisted for almost a month, creating a challenging situation for both medical staff and patients.

According to a staff from the department, the shortage of reagents is a result of the termination of a previous contract with medical suppliers. The hospital is making emergency purchases to meet the ongoing demand for laboratory tests as a stopgap measure.

Patients requesting for selected laboratory tests at UP-PGH are being advised to seek tests from private hospitals or diagnostic centers at their own expense due to the scarcity of reagents.

As of writing, the UP-PGH Director has not provided updates regarding efforts to address the reagent shortage.

This is a developing story.
